A Confidant subscription renews automatically, every month or every year depending on the plan you chose. If you bought a license instead, see Update coverage explained for how the update plan renews.
Automatic renewal
Your card is charged at the start of each billing period, monthly or yearly, and you get an email receipt. There's nothing you need to do to stay subscribed.
To change your card, open the Stripe billing portal and enter the email you subscribed with. Stripe emails you a sign-in link. In the portal you can update your card, see past invoices or cancel.
If your subscription lapses
If a payment fails and isn't fixed, your subscription ends. You can't start new sessions, but everything you already have stays available. You can still open, edit, export and write notes for existing sessions. Nothing is locked or deleted.
To renew:
Click Renew subscription. It's in the session panel when you try to start a session, and in Settings › Account › License & referral.
Finish checkout.
Back in Confidant, click I've renewed, check again, or Check now in Settings › Account › License & referral.
How Confidant checks your subscription
Once a day, when you're online, Confidant quietly checks that your subscription is active. It sends your license key and nothing else. Nothing about your clients or sessions ever leaves your computer.
If it can't check for a while, for example because you've been offline:
After 5 days, you'll see a warning that Confidant couldn't verify your subscription.
After 7 days, you can't start new sessions until it checks again. Your existing sessions and notes stay available.
Go online and click Check now in Settings › Account › License & referral to check right away.
Cancelling
To cancel, open the billing portal and cancel your plan there. Your subscription stays active until the end of the current billing period. After that, you can't start new sessions, but your existing sessions and notes stay available. Resubscribe any time to pick up where you left off.
