Adding a patient

Written by Jason

Steps

  1. Click + next to Clients in the sidebar (or press ⌘N). A blank patient page opens with the name field ready.

  2. Type the patient's name

  3. Click Save or press Return

The patient's page opens, and they appear in the sidebar list.

To back out, click Cancel or press Esc. Nothing is saved. If you navigate away with a name typed, Confidant saves the patient anyway and shows an "Added …" message with Undo, so a half-finished entry is never lost.

Patient details

A name is all you need to add a patient. Date of birth, pronouns, private notes, modality, note format and the rest are set afterwards on the patient's page. Until you add them, the line under the patient's name shows + Add pronouns (recommended) and + Add date of birth; click either or Client settings to open Client settings at the Profile tab. (If you've switched Confidant to say "patients", the button reads Patient settings.) See Editing patient details.

Available Fields

  • Name — appears in the sidebar and at the top of the patient's page. Required.

  • Date of birth — shown in the header of exported notes. Doesn't appear in the note text.

  • Pronouns — drives pronoun usage in generated notes ("he reported," "they expressed"). Options: He / Him, She / Her, They / Them, or Not specified. Not specified means notes use third-person clinical voice ("client reported").

  • Private notes — free-form scratch space for referral source, logistics, or anything else you want at hand. For you only: never sent to the AI when generating notes. That's the Case Overview, which builds itself over time.

How many patients can I add?

Unlimited. Confidant doesn't charge per patient or per session. Add as many as you need.

Can I import patients from another system?

Not yet via the UI. If you have a list to import, contact support — we can help with a one-off import for now, and bulk import is on the roadmap.

What if I add the same patient twice by accident?

When you type a name that matches an existing patient, Confidant warns you and offers a link to open the existing one. You can still save if it really is a different person with the same name.

If a duplicate slips through, each copy has its own session history, so you can't merge them after the fact (yet — also on the roadmap). To clean up, archive or delete the duplicate (see Archiving a patient) and record future sessions under the original.
